The six-week video series by Gary Thomas based on his book “Sacred Marriage – What if God designed marriage to make us holy more than to make us happy?” was presented at Saint Francis Church in Dunlap, IL and Saint Peter’s Church in Canton, IL in June and July.
Each evening began with an opening thought or question and then we watched a short video. After the video we discussed the corresponding points and questions from the participant’s guide. The video series exposed our modern culture’s version of marital values and challenged us to embrace the Biblical values for marriage. Thomas burst the bubble on the idea that “My spouse is here to make me happy” and substituted the example of Jesus who stated that he “came to serve rather than to be served.”
Thomas also encourages the biblical values that frame Christian marriage in the context of serving God and giving Him the glory in all situations – especially the difficult situations. In so doing we grow as Jesus’ disciples, which has profound implications on marriage and other relationships. This series is excellent for marriage enhancement as well as preparation for marriage. There are multiple resources for “Sacred Marriage” – the book, a free PDF online with discussion questions, the video series and a companion participant’s guide.
Without fail the attendees at both churches indicated how much they wished more people could attend this series. It was excellent and comes highly recommended. For more information, see www.garythomas.com or contact Fr. Van McCalister.
