Spirit led thoughts from the Canon to the Ordinary
I LOVE JESUS. Those are the first three words from my first sermon 10 years ago as I began my service as rector of St. Mary of the Snows Anglican Church in Eagle River. I said at the time, story people tend to remember your opening statement. I cited John F. Kennedy’s “Ask not what your country can do for you, Ask what you can do for your country.” I said to my parishioners, “If you’re going to remember anything I said, remember those three words.”
As I begin serving in a new role in the Diocese of Quincy, I want all the clergy and laity of the diocese to remember these three words. They drive and motivate everything I do. As a diocese, I know Bishop Morales believes this is what needs to drive what we do. Not only do I think people tend to remember the first things you say, I think they’re more inclined to remember them if you keep it short. So I’ll only add this before I close this brief message.
The opening paragraph of the Job Description for the Canon to the Ordinary that Bishop Morales has given me says this—
“Purpose of the Diocesan Staff: The purpose of the Diocesan Staff is to serve and encourage the congregations, institutions, organizations and people of the Diocese of Quincy in their mission and ministry of proclaiming and doing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In all things modeling commitment to Jesus as Lord and to each other as a team, the Diocesan Staff is also called to leadership in articulating and enabling a vision of diocesan mission and ministry which, in Christ, builds up the church and evangelizes the unchurched.”
This understanding seems to fit very well with the fact that I LOVE JESUS. As a diocese we are all called to lead people to love Jesus, walk with people as they grow in spiritual maturity, and encourage people to go out into the world and care for the people Jesus cares for. I can’t imagine a group of people that I would more like to do this with than the clergy and laity of the Diocese of Quincy. This is going to be fun because, I LOVE JESUS.
