Eye Glass Cleaning Ministry

Members of St. Barnabas Anglican Church are providing a wonderful opportunity for all of us to see just a little more clearly how simple it is to reach out and do something really nice for someone.

Last fall the group began offering its Eyeglass Cleaning Ministry for folks who reside at Shorehaven Assisted Living in Oconomowoc. On the first Thursday of each month, residents are invited to stop by the community gathering space to have their eyeglasses cleaned. Shorehaven staff will also bring down trays of eyeglasses from residents that aren’t feeling up for a visit.

Of course, this ministry offers more than sparkling eyewear. “We all just start chatting and telling stories while we are cleaning glasses. It’s such a nice way to provide fellowship and maybe even some comfort. I love the simplicity of it,” says Anne Raskopf.

St. Barnabas began holding its Sunday worship services in Shorehaven’s Center for Life Enrichment in July. The church has also reached out to the community through a weekly book study at Whelan’s Coffee in downtown Oconomowoc and also a pet blessing in the Shorehaven great room in October.

“The heart of what we are trying to do at St. Barnabas is to be more than just a place to come to on a Sunday for church,” explains Fr. Eric Raskopf. “We want to be a part of a community of caring by providing a ministry of presence. Jesus said, ‘I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ There is more happening than just cleaning eyeglasses.”

Shorehaven Chaplain Nick Slater is grateful for the partnership with St. Barnabas Church. “Building relationships and doing what you can for others is so important. Christ is in all of us and when we can connect with other people, we should,” he says. “Our relationship with St. Barnabas and sharing our campus here at Shorehaven has been wonderful. We are very grateful for their partnership.”
